Turning Conflict Into Connection – Interview with Gail Carroll
Gandhi comes to mind, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Be the change you want to be. In this moment, with this person, in this challenge, who do you want to be?
Once I recognize that I’m in conflict – that there’s something happening, that there’s a charge – I want to set the intention that I’m going to react consciously rather than being reactive and out of control.
If I’m someone who wants to live in peace – wants to create peace – wants to be connected to people that I care about, then it’s an opportunity for me to use my values – to live how I want to live.
What I think can happen, when there is a charge when we’re in conflict or we’re angry – that charge has energy to it. So, it can be exciting to say, “I’m going to use this energy to carry something forward – to be who and what I want to be.” Rather than just following that energy wherever it might lead.
There’s so much aliveness when your angry or when your upset. It’s a pretty cool thing to channel that energy into connection. I can be alive and open to you. I think that’s a reason why we sometimes feel more connected to people once we’ve had a successful conflict – because we’re wide open when we’re that alive.
